The Statistic Helen

The statistc Helen, though intent,
Wasn’t born Hippolyta to befriend;
In common such an airy bit,
Ha’p’orth indeed, so petite,
An illiberal, bigoted detail,
Apt, word-province
Grandeur to belittle,
Most oft no voice, merely
And not a stop:
Should we not just have it chopped?

Hidebound like a numerical fact,
Hesitation that occasions ―
Vowel double act,
Put to note, ere and again, post-haste:
Would it have vexed Theseus’ taste?

Arisen of mid-vanity,
Bore yet to eternity;
Would the simple letter humane
Tell to hold Troy? Horse’s hair?

The world may never have seen her original handwriting, if her skill was taken for supernatural. Feel welcome to Poems by Emily Dickinson prepared for print by Teresa Pelka: thematic stanzas, notes on the Greek and Latin inspiration, the correlative with Webster 1828, and the Aristotelian motif, Things perpetual — these are not in time, but in eternity.
